Freeport - Home of L.L. Bean, the store is open 24/7/365 and worth checking out. Also find dozens of outlets, such as Gap, Banana, Mikasa, Coach, Ralph Lauren, Kenneth Cole, Cole Haan, Laura Ashley, London Fog, etc. Beware of traffic and lost people from New Jersey/NY.
Bath- Bath is not as quaint as most tourist destinations, but it has a cute downtown, some nice ship captain's homes and conveniences. Best thing for locals is Reny's Deptertment store. You can find great deals on just about anything.
Five Islands/ Georgetown Island - Georgetown Island near Five Islands and Reid State Park is beautiful. When there, head to the beach. Maine beaches have course sand, however, Reid State Park has one fo the beashes in Maine. Careful, the water is cold. Five Islands has a good lobster pound.
Wiscasset - One of Maine's prettiest villages. Eat at Red's Eat's, a famous hot dog and lobster roll stand. The village has reasonable shopping for gifts.
Boothbay Harbor - If you can't make it to Camden, stop here. BBH has some great shops, in between the touristy ones. The harbor is small, quaint, and packed with boats. You could waste at least half a day walking around the village and spend another half a day on a boat trip.
Pemaquid Point Lighthouse - Pemaquid Point and Pemaquid Lighthouse offer dramatic ocean views, crashing surf and a picturesque lighthouse. This is out of the way, but worth the visit. You will feel as if you are standing on the edge of the earth. Find a photo or two in the gallery.
Moody's Diner - In Waldoboro, stop at the storied Moody's Diner in Waldoboro for the REAL Maine experience -- Ayuh! Don't forget to get a Maine blueberry pie.
Rockland - Rockland's gentrification of the old district makes it more interesting to visit than in years past. Worth a stop if you have time to waste.
Camden - One of the best places in Maine, you can spend a day or two in Camden. You can shop, walk around the village, take a boat ride and drive or hike Mt. Battie for a beautiful view overlooking the bay.
Monhegan Island - You can only access Monhegan via ferry. This is a great idea for someone looking to get away from the crowds. It can be a good day trip or a retreat for several days. There's plenty of scenery, hiking and photo opportunites.
Kennebunkport - Stop in Kennebunkport if you want to see the Bush family compound! It's an understated building perched on a rocky point at the edge of the ocean. Cute village, too.
Portland Visit the Old Port filled with shops, an art movie theater, bars and restaurants. This is a good place for city folks craving a beer and a crowd. You will find good microbrews at some bars. The nightlife in the Old Port is vibrant.
Boston - If you fly into Boston (pronounced Baaaston) consider spending the night. You can visit the Freedom Trail, Fenway Park, Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Havard (pronounced Haa-vaad), MIT, Boston Commons (the city park), Cheers (near the park), and Newberry Street (high-end shopping).
Mount Desert Island/Bar Harbor - In Downeast Maine (meaning way up north). More shopping and a cute village, but a really great choice for photographers, bikers and hikers in the Nat'l Park. (Acadia National Park )
Films- The film "In The Bedroom" is set in Rockland and Camden. "The Man Without a Face" (Mel Gibson) was shot in Bath and other sites along the midcoast. Many scenes in "Forrest Gump" and "Message in a Bottle" were also shot in Maine.
