Wiscasset is 20 minutes north of Bath, Maine, along Route 1. So, you can easily reach points north, such as Boothbay and Camden-Rockport, and places south such as Bath and Portland. Wiscasset is a good way stop or a nice place to spend the night.
It is a prestine village that benefited from overfilled tax coffers thanks to a recently decommisioned nuclear power plant called "Maine Yankee". All the revenue from Maine Yankee was poured into maintaining the streets, buildings trash transfer facility (known by some locals as 'Chateau Le Trash'), local schools, and resulting in very low taxes for all of the residents. As a result, the village exhibits some of the finest historic homes in Maine. Rumor has it that Wiscasset has more snow removal equipment that New York city -- This has not been verified.
The village has numerous cute gift stores, restaurants and a growing number of antique shops. It has avoided the T-Shirt seeking bus tours for years and so the visitor is more appt to find high quality gifts in its shops.
At one time, Wiscasset was known for having two four-masted schooners in the harbor. The Hesper and Luther Little were 'beached' in Wiscasset harbor for 50 years until the decay became an insurance liability for the village and the remains of the hulks were stripped from the harbor.
Overlooking where the ships once languished is Le Garage, one of the best restaurants in Maine. Owned by the same family for 30+ years, Le Garage has exceptional French-inspired cuisine. Crepes are found on the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus along with dinner staples such as broiled haddock. The Indian Pudding is a rare treat, distinctive to this restaurant and New England.
If you are looking for a lobster roll, the World Famous Red's Eats may be the best place in Maine to go. The New York Times evangalizes Red's Eats almost yearly. As a result, during July and August a constant line of 10-20 people stretches around the tiny little hot dog stand in order to eat at Red's. What makes Red's lobster roll so great? The roll contains an entire lobster. Red's is no larger than a garden shed, but does millions of dollars in business every year. Celebrities have been known to haunt Red's late at night.
